Discover how play and practice build creative confidence. Try the Pumpkin Patch color challenge and reconnect with the joy of painting this fall.
It’s in the brushstrokes that wander, the colors that surprise us and the quiet moments where we simply show up.
This week, I’ve been thinking about how play, simple, unstructured, messy play is what builds real creative confidence. Not the kind that comes from perfect outcomes, but the kind that grows slowly, like muscle memory, each time you pick up your brush and try again.
Last week I painted with no goal in mind just a jar of cloudy water, a few fall hues and a willingness to make a mess. At first, it felt uncomfortable (I hadn’t been painting regularly). But a few minutes in, I remembered why I started painting in the first place: because it feels good to create and let everything else fade away for a while.
Confidence isn’t built by avoiding mistakes, it’s built by making them, watching them dry, and realizing they weren’t mistakes at all, just part of the process.
Give yourself permission to paint for the sake of painting. No portfolio piece, no product in mind—just process, play, and peace.
Create a space where nothing has to be shared or finished. These pages become your quiet teachers, showing you what you’re drawn to, what delights you, and what you’re learning.
Pull out an older piece and recreate it using your current tools, palette, and skills. Seeing your growth on the page is one of the fastest ways to rekindle confidence. You might not feel like you’re growing, but you are.
Each month, I share one color to spark new ideas in your sketchbook or digital workspace.
